MOLIFREZA - PRESTAÇÃO DE SERV. DE MOLDES, UNIP., LDA, a manufacturer of metal molds in Portugal, needed to reconstruct damaged mold tools which have reached the end of their life expectancy. Without the existence of a CAD file, this process was time consuming and was having a dramatic effect upon production. The ideal solution was to use 3D Scanning as the first step in the reverse engineering process.

The COMET LƎD range of 3D sensors with blue light technology are able to record up to 8M measurement points in only about 2 seconds, making it far significantly faster than conventional tactile systems. To capture data on parts with a high number of features. The COMET LƎD contact-free measurement principle facilitates rapid measurement of objects, which are very difficult to measure using conventional measuring machines/tactile measuring heads. The COMET LƎD sensor is compact, ready for use within an extremely short period of time and can be positioned using a standard commercial camera/video tripod. The short operating distance also means the systems can be easily accommodated, even in confined spaces.
RESULT / BENEFITS FOR THE CUSTOMER
Maximum accuracy and data quality was required in order to reconstruct the damaged mold presented. The purpose of the acquisition of 3D data was subsequently to create a three-dimensional mesh of high quality to be used as basis for the preparation of its reverse engineering. For this application, the system of choice was the COMET LƎD which was used to quickly and easily scan the damaged mold, generating the high quality data and detail required for reverse engineering. Significantly speeding up the process meant delays were avoided, allowing MOLIFREZA to meet their production deadlines. Due to it’s size, it was a benefit to scan the mold in situ which due to the portability of the COMET sensor, wasn’t a problem. The result was a quick and easy workflow enabling MOLIFREZA to produce a replacement mold.
